Day 1 - Journey to Luxembourg
We depart St Pancras International by Eurostar for Brussels. In the Belgian capital we join a train to Luxembourg, which takes us southwards through the beautiful Ardennes region of southern Belgium, past rolling hills and meandering rivers. On our arrival in Luxembourg, we transfer to the 4* Novotel Luxembourg Kirchberg, a superb modern hotel located in the city, close to the European institutions, and just a short bus ride from the historical Old Town. This evening, we dine together in our hotel. (D)
Day 2 - Guided tour of Luxembourg
After a leisurely start, we meet up for a guided walking tour of this lovely compact city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site seated on top of a rocky promontory. Following the tour, you are free to explore Luxembourg at your own pace, and perhaps visit the magical and colourful Christmas Markets. During advent, the city hosts two distinct Christmas Markets, one on Place d'Armes, and one on Place de Paris, where the Christmas tree is illuminated by over 16,000 lights. Wooden stalls offer stollen cake, homemade gifts, Mettwurscht (a local sausage speciality) and schnapps! As you wander around the festive chalets you may like to enjoy a cup of warming mulled wine. This evening you are free to dine in a restaurant of your choice, or perhaps sample the local fayre which can be found in either of the Christmas Markets. (B)
Day 3 - Trier Christmas Market
We transfer by coach to the train station in time to join a regional service to Trier, just over the border in Germany, situated on the banks of the Moselle River. The city of Trier claims to be the oldest in Germany, and was founded over 2,000 years ago. The city features stunning Roman architecture, such as the imposing Porta Nigra, the largest Roman Gate north of the Alps. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Porta Nigra is not to be missed. Trier's Christmas Market, one of the best in Germany, is held every year against the charming backdrop of medieval Hauptmarkt square and the impressive Cathedral. Around 100 festively decorated little wooden huts offer a wide range of arts, crafts, toys and much more. You are free to wander around the market at your leisure. You may want to warm yourself up, as the German's do, with a steaming mug of glühwein, accompanied by some roasted chestnuts or a delicious bratwurst. On our return to Luxembourg, we come together for a farewell dinner in the hotel. (B,D)
